What is the Present Perfect Tense?

This tense is really a useful because it shows a relationship between the past and present. Do not try to translate this tense into the Indonesian language, just try to accept the concepts of this tense. You will soon learn to like using the present perfect tense!

How do we use this tense?

There is always a connection with the past and with the present. The action happens in the past and there isn’t any focus on a specific time in the past. We are only concerned about result or outcome of the action.

We use the Present Perfect to talk about:

Experience

  • I have studied the Indonesian language since 2001
  • I have visited several South East Asian countries
  • I have tried many delicious Indonesian foods

Actions that began in the past and continue today

  • Gurukumrd has lived in Jakarta for six years.
  • He has worked with English Today for six years.
  • How long have you lived in Setiabudi?
When the time period for the action hasn’t finished or ended
  • I have studied the Indonesian language since 2001
  • I have visited several South East Asian countries
  • I have tried many delicious Indonesian foods

Change

  • We use the present perfect tense to talk about changes over a period of time.
  • Her English has really improved since she started with English Today.
  • He has developed into a great leader.
    I have become much more confident speaking English
Repetitive Actions
  • We have visited Bandung 6 times since moving to Jakarta
  • English Today has taught Gojek staff three times every year since 2017
  • He has recorded three albums this year.

How to Form the Present Perfect

The present perfect has both a model very to have plus the past participle of the full verb. Subject + has / have + past participle
